In June 2009, the RHA completed 14 years of collecting recyclable paper to raise
funds for community projects and save valuable resources. This sustained effort
is an outstanding example of volunteerism and has contributed to a better
environment and a better Rossmoor. Starting with collection of about 15,500 lb in
July 1995, the paper drive volunteers have loaded over 6, 938,000 pounds of mill
grade recyclable news print as well as over 400 tons of mixed waste (plastic bags,
magazines, and lower quality paper into those large blue bins, a bin can hold
almost 20,000 pounds. Total volunteer time is estimated to be over 7,500 hours.
Funds remaining after expenses have been used for:
- Construction and equipment for the Rush Park Tot Lot
- Purchase of parkway trees
- Construction and equipment for the Rush Park kitchen
- Construction, plants, and equipment for the Triangle Park outside the wall at
the southeast corner of Rossmoor
- Painting house numbers on curbs to help emergency responders find
homes every other year
- Construction and landscaping for the RCSD office entry at Rush Park
- Support of annual Rossmoor picnics
Volunteers transfer papers from cars to the bins. They also pick up papers from
those who cannot drive to the collection location at the northeast corner of
Rossmoor Park. Volunteers range in age from high school students and younger
children working with parents to persons over 80. Los Alamitos High School
students include members of the Key Club and the Los Alamitos Baseball
Boosters Club as well as Boy Scouts and independent students working to
receive community service credit for their effort. . The CR&R waste management
company has been very supportive of our effort, providing the bins for the paper
and hauling the bins at no cost to the RHA.
